Conference USA Predict and Win Game of the Week; Tulsa at SMU
The Southern Methodist Mustangs welcome the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes Saturday in what is shaping up to be a tough Conference USA West division matchup. Both teams are coming off their first conference loss and find themselves among four schools leading the West with 2-1 conference records. After Saturday, one of these two teams will still be chasing the Conference USA title. The other will be trying to find their way back.
Both schools have been tested so far this season. Tulsa’s 4-3 record includes losses to top ranked Oklahoma and Boise State and a last second let down against UTEP. SMU’s 3-4 start includes tough overtime losses to Washington State and Navy.
Tulsa’s offensive line will need to step up and provide solid protection for quarterback G.J. Kenne. They’ll also need to hold onto the ball as SMU has one of the best turnover records in the country forcing a total of 20 so far this season.
On the other side of the ball, SMU starting quarterback Levi Mitchell will probably be out with a shoulder injury leaving starting duties to freshman Kyle Padron. Expect Padron to turn to running back Shawnbrey McNeal for help. He’ll also need the SMU defense to put him in good field position.
Although they struggled against UTEP, the Tulsa defense is one of the top in the conference for both yards allowed and defensive touchdowns.
With Tulsa looking at Houston and Eastern Carolina on the horizon, this is a must win game if they want to keep their conference hopes alive. While SMU’s loss to Houston won’t help them any, a win on Saturday will keep them in the hunt.
