Delay does not mean denial. All athletes know that, and I got a taste of it when I came out on top in my journey through the competition for the Beef O’ Brady’s Bowl Talent Tryouts. You see I’ve been waiting for an opportunity like this for a while. Do my thing in front of ESPN decision makers? YES! Someone will finally see I belong on the sidelines, in-studio, locker room, ringside, trackside… somewhere – doing sports.
Back to the Game Host contest – It all began when I missed the deadline for last year’s competition. Basically just found out about it too late. No worries right? Fast forward a year and again – I’m so side tracked “making a living” I almost miss the window – see though I got my degree in Broadcasting from UF, I’m also an athlete and certified fitness expert. So I’m 8 counting it in my workout wear, torturing a client – then – clean up – throw on my “sideline reporter girl” look and it’s off to my local citrus park Beef O’ Brady’s with tripod and camera bag in hand, all the while repeating in my head the quickly crafted script I had compiled for the 1 minute video. Of course the only place to set up was in the middle of construction workers having yummy-looking beer-cheese soup, chicken wings and beer and catching up on all the latest ESPN news on the many flat screen tvs. Thanks to Sherri the bartender/waitress/camera operator for pressing my buttons! I actually had several customers cheering me on as I did a couple quick takes of my audition and packed up. Quick wardrobe change in a phone booth and it’s SUPER giiiirrrllll… back to a grueling cardio kick session…8, 7, 6…! All in a day’s work. After I viewed it later, the lighting wasn’t great but passable, but I knew my performance was on point.
The frenzy paid off as I made it into the final round. This final audition was no piece of cake– no teleprompters, ear prompters or cliff notes. It was get ‘er done time. Six of us rounded up our research, queued up our questions, composed our commercials…yes, and cleared our throats and headed over to Clearwater for the showdown. I never told anyone this but the weekend of November 10/11 was melancholy as it was the anniversary of my dog, Rasta’s passing so I fought emotionally to stay focused and finish the job. I knew if I did my best I would win. So I drove over the beautiful Courtney Campbell Causeway still trying to resonate on happy thoughts of the cherished years with my best friend and now guardian angel – all while I go over my lines out loud. Another fun side bar to that week is, I lost my voice on Wednesday. I woke up and nothing would come out. Long story short – 20 bags of Throat Coat tea and the entire inventory of cough drops from Walgreens later, I arrived at CEA Marketing and once hearing the sounds of the Gators homecoming game on the big screen – I knew it was going to go well.
Polite conversation – everyone sizing each other up – solo photos, group photos and then… “Sonee – they’re ready for you”. Judges staring, Lights glaring, camera rolling, action…
I’ll be there and can’t wait to interview the coaches and executives that are behind these two exciting teams. Our Executive Director of the St. Petersburg Bowl, Brett Dulaney will also be in the house along with Danny Wuerfel, Mike Alstott and a host of other celebrities. You can stay connected by following me on Twitter, Facebook and my weekly sports column, Sonee’s Florida Sports Report!
