Game of the Week Recap: Houston Avoids a Close Call, Pittsburgh Extends to 8-1
Houston Saves Game in Final 10 Seconds
For the second week in a row, Houston scored 40+ points and still found themselves struggling to pull off a close win. And pull off a close win they did.
As the third quarter neared an end, the No. 15 Cougars were trailing by 11 points, but the big lead didn’t last long. After scoring 10 unanswered points, Tulsa kicked off to Houston’s Tyron Carrier who returned the ball 98 yards to bring Houston within four. A field goal midway through the fourth quarter put the score at 38-37, Tulsa.
With only 3:28 left in the game, Tulsa punched through from the one yard line to make it an eight point game. Not to be deterred, Houston brought it right back down the field scoring with only 21 seconds left on the clock to put the score at 45-47 Tulsa.
With time running out, Houston needed the two point conversion which would send the game into overtime. Quarterback Case Keenum dropped back only to find Tulsa’s Tanner Antle coming at him unchecked making the sack in what looked like a game-ending play.
Houston then attempted and made the onside kick recovering the ball on their own 39 yard line. With only 10 seconds left on the clock, Keenum’s first pass was incomplete. The next two weren’t and the Cougars moved the ball 27 yards setting up a long field goal for Matt Hogan. With just three seconds left, Hogan kicked a career-long 51-yard field goal ending the game for Houston.
In the final 21 seconds, Houston put nine points on the board and extended their record to 9-1.
Pittsburgh Bowls Over Syracuse
Both Pittsburgh and Syracuse got off to a slow start Saturday and neither found the end zone until late in the first half. But with 1:20 left in the half, Pittsburgh’s Gary Williams picked off a pass at mid field returning it 51 yards for a touchdown.
That gave the Panthers the wake up call they needed as they put another 24 points on the board before Syracuse scored six on a late game touchdown.
Pittsburgh quarterback Bill Stull threw 16/23 and 225 yards while Dion Lewis and company added another 247 yards on the ground continuing the Panther’s dual threat attack.
Pitt moves to No. 12 in the BCS standing but will be tested in the next three weeks as they face Notre Dame, West Virginia and Cincinnati. Syracuse needs to win out for any hope of post season play.
Who’s Going to the St. Pete Bowl?
With just a few weeks left to go, who do you think we’ll see at the St. Petersburg Bowl? There are a number of good teams and good games left in both The Big East and Conference USA.
Leave a comment and let us know who you think it will be.
